Experience the enchanting melodies of master composers Johannes Brahms and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) welcomes the new year with its captivating “Fate” concert on January 12, 2024, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati.

In the fifth installment of the 39th concert season, titled Switch, the PPO, led by music director Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, will showcase Brahms’s Piano Concerto no. 1, op. 15, D minor, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 4, op. 36, F minor.

Highlighting Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, known as “Fatum” (Fate), the symphony explores the emotional struggles of the composer, featuring a recurring motif and delving into themes of destiny. Tchaikovsky’s orchestration and lyrical richness contribute to the enduring appeal of this remarkable symphony.

For the fifth concert, acclaimed pianist Jerome Rose will interpret Brahms’s masterpiece, revealing a melancholic melody floating atop a gently rocking accompaniment reminiscent of river water. This piece narrates Brahms’s challenging years, intertwined with the influential composer and pianist Robert Schumann and his spouse, Clara.

Recognized as “the Last Romantic of his generation,” Jerome Rose, a gold medalist in the International Busoni Competition, began his international career in his 20s. His critical recordings on Medici Classics include Liszt Concerti, Schumann Sonatas, Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Ballades, and more.

In addition to his extensive discography, Rose’s notable works also include Schubert Posthumous Sonatas, Liszt’s B minor Sonata, and a Brahms Recording of Sonata No. 3. Medici Classics has re-released his Prix du Disque recording of Liszt’s “Years of Pilgrimage” and a Liszt 40th Anniversary Collection.

As the country’s leading orchestra, the PPO has premiered Filipino compositions and showcased works by foreign composers not yet performed in the Philippines.

Continuing its mission to promote music appreciation, the PPO will conduct outreach concerts in Iloilo on January 19 and in Capiz on January 21.
