“Something magical happens when artists come together!” Ballet Manila’s creative director, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, shared her excitement about the upcoming world premiere of Florante at Laura.
This remarkable production follows the success of Ballet Manila’s award-winning Ibong Adarna and will be staged at Aliw Theater on October 12, 2024, at 8 PM, and on October 13 and 19, 2024, at 5 PM. Florante at Laura brings together esteemed talents in music, literature, ballet, and stage production for a one-of-a-kind collaboration.
A Collaboration of Artistic Masters
“Florante at Laura was always intended as Gerardo Francisco’s next epic project, planned long before the pandemic,” Lisa recalled. Gerardo, Ballet Manila’s principal dancer and co-artistic associate, choreographed Ibong Adarna and now joins forces with renowned British choreographer Martin Lawrance, who previously worked on Ballet Manila’s Romeo and Juliet.
Gerardo emphasized the importance of clear communication and mutual support in this collaboration. Martin agreed, adding, “We just seem to click and bounce ideas off each other. Communication has been the key!”
Lisa invited esteemed writer and Balagtasan expert Professor Michael Coroza to create the libretto. The next challenge was finding a composer, and Lisa envisioned a Filipino equivalent to Tchaikovsky—someone who could compose sweeping, romantic music. She was thrilled when National Artist for Music, Ryan Cayabyab, agreed to join the project.
Ryan Cayabyab, whose work spans from orchestras to television, shared, “It’s been a while since I wrote a large musical work, but this project has been a thrilling challenge.” His son, Toma Cayabyab, will conduct the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth to bring the score to life.
An Epic Production with Mesmerizing Visuals
Florante at Laura is a literary masterpiece by Francisco Baltasar, following the story of Duke Florante’s struggle for freedom and love. Set designer Mio Infante crafted the stage to reflect the characters’ internal and external conflicts, while costume designers Otto and Therese Hernandez explained that costumes play a crucial role in defining the narrative.
Lighting director John Batalla added, “Mood is a major element, and lighting will transport audiences to different times and places.”
