The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) opens its 93rd theater season with MORYON, a Filipino reimagining of Guy de Maupassant’s Mother Sauvage. Written and directed by Dudz Teraña, the play is set during the Japanese Occupation of Marinduque and explores faith, grief, justice, family, and survival during wartime.
Set on Holy Thursday in Mogpog, Marinduque, MORYON brings audiences into a community where religious traditions continue despite the realities of war. The story centers on the Moriones tradition, known for its masked devotees who take part in acts of penance and devotion. Behind these masks, however, are individuals struggling with fear, loss, memory, and difficult choices.
At the heart of MORYON is Caridad, a mother waiting for her son Joaquin, a young guerrilla determined to prove his worth in a world that has often underestimated him. As the conflict reaches their home, Caridad is forced to face a painful decision that challenges her understanding of faith, justice, and a mother’s love.
Faith, Grief, and Justice Behind the Mask
More than a historical drama, MORYON examines what happens when personal grief clashes with deeply held beliefs and traditions. Through the story of Caridad and her community, the production raises difficult questions about justice and morality during times of violence.
By adapting Maupassant’s Mother Sauvage to the cultural and historical setting of Marinduque during the Japanese Occupation, MORYON presents a distinctly Filipino perspective on a timeless moral dilemma. The play asks audiences to reflect on where faith stands in moments of violence, what justice means when grief takes over, and how far a person can go in the name of survival.
The production also highlights the collaborative work of student artists from the Far Eastern University Theater Guild. Behind the stage are Assistant Director Kirstan Erin Wayne Orbegoso, Executive Director Maria Ysabel R. delos Reyes, Finance Director Trisha Tan, Production Manager Marjorie E. Uson, Head Stage Manager Danielle Schwartz, Production Designer Althea Carla H. Sibulo, Technical Director Martin Gabriel L. Mesina, Multimedia Director Johann Edgar S. Oliveros, Marketing Director Edrud Adriyel Madalan, Publicity Director Irish Jane L. Oliveros, and House Manager Zoe Trinity C. Sisam.
Bringing the main characters to life, Maria Alexandra Mayano and Maria Ysabel Delos Reyes alternate as Caridad, while Dave Bambang and Aldin Covarrubias portray Esteban.
MORYON Show Dates and Ticket Prices
MORYON will be staged at the FEU Center for the Arts Studio on selected dates from October through November 2026.
Performances are scheduled on October 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, and 30, followed by November 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28.
The house opens at 6:00 PM, with the performance starting at 6:30 PM. Audiences are encouraged to arrive 30 to 60 minutes early to take part in a free guided walk around FEU’s Art Deco Campus, adding a cultural and architectural experience before the show.
Ticket prices are ₱150 for FEU students, faculty, staff, and FEU/FTG alumni with Alumni ID; ₱250 for non-FEU students with valid ID; ₱500 for FTG alumni without Alumni ID, PWDs, and senior citizens; and ₱700 for the general public.
With its combination of Philippine history, Marinduque culture, religious tradition, and wartime drama, MORYON offers audiences an opportunity to see a familiar Filipino tradition through a darker and more emotional lens. The Far Eastern University Theater Guild’s 93rd season opener brings together history, faith, grief, and moral conflict in a story that continues to ask what people are willing to sacrifice when faced with loss and injustice.
