The Sandbox Collective is bringing back the award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening for a highly anticipated and limited rerun in February 2027. The production will open at The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center, Makati City, giving Filipino theater audiences another opportunity to experience one of the most acclaimed contemporary rock musicals.

The recent staging of Spring Awakening earned 17 citations from the Gawad Buhay Awards, further establishing the production as one of the most celebrated local theater productions of the season. The upcoming 2027 rerun is expected to reignite the show’s powerful conversations about youth, identity, sexuality, morality, family, and society.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening features a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Duncan Sheik. Based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial play, the musical combines a compelling coming-of-age story with an electrifying alternative rock score.

Set in 19th-century Germany, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers as they navigate adolescence, changing bodies, sexuality, and the difficult questions surrounding adulthood. Their search for answers brings them into conflict with strict parents, rigid institutions, and a conservative society that struggles to understand their experiences. Through its music and storytelling, the production explores the timeless frustrations, fears, and emotions of young people.

For the Spring Awakening 2027 rerun, Gawad Buhay nominee Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan returns as director, while multi-awarded musical director Ejay Yatco leads the musical direction. Pamintuan is known for productions including Muli, Lungs, and Sa Wakas, while Yatco’s theater credits include Side Show, Next to Normal, and Little Shop of Horrors.

The creative team also includes Nunoy Van Den Burgh as choreographer, Missy Maramara as intimacy director, Wika Nadera as set designer, Raven Ong as costume designer, Gabbi Campomanes as assistant director, and D Cortezano as lighting designer.

Beyond its theatrical run, Spring Awakening continues The Sandbox Collective’s commitment to education and advocacy. The 2027 rerun aims to use theater as a platform for meaningful conversations while delivering a powerful live experience through its music, performances, and storytelling.

Ticket information for Spring Awakening 2027 will be announced soon. The production is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), New York, NY, USA.
