Tanghalang Ateneo, the esteemed theater company under the Loyola Schools of Ateneo de Manila University, is set to present Medea in its 46th season. Directed by Ron Capinding and featuring a powerful Filipino translation by National Artist for Literature and Theater Rolando S. Tinio, this production promises to captivate audiences starting in November 2024.

A Story of Betrayal and Vengeance

Medea, first performed in 431 BC, tells the harrowing tale of a sorceress betrayed by her husband, Jason, after she aids him in securing the coveted Golden Fleece. When Jason leaves her for Creon’s daughter, Medea finds herself banished but cunningly persuades Creon to grant her one final day in the palace. In this brief time, she meticulously plots her revenge, leading to devastating consequences as she sends cursed gifts to the princess, resulting in their tragic deaths. The climax reveals Medea’s ultimate act of vengeance—murdering her own children to inflict maximum pain on Jason, leaving him to grapple with the ruins of his choices.

This landmark work of classical Greek theater resonates with themes of betrayal, revenge, and the destructive nature of passion—universal elements that still echo in contemporary society.

A Season of Eloquence and Humanity

Aligned with the company’s theme for the season, “Eloquentia, Sapientia, Humanitas: The Ricky Season,” Medea intertwines eloquence, wisdom, and humanity through its poignant dialogue and the emotional turbulence of its characters. Guelan Varela-Luarca, Tanghalang Ateneo’s Artistic Director, highlights the power of words in this production:

“May paniniwala ang maraming mga sinaunang kultura, isa na roon ang mga Griyego, na may pisikal na epekto ang mga salita… Iyon ang isa sa maraming dahilan kung bakit dapat nating balik-balikan ang teatro ng mga Griyego.”

The language of Medea, steeped in the blood of betrayal and revenge, evokes deep emotional responses, compelling the audience to reflect on their own experiences of love and loss.
