The DUP (Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas), the genius behind the staging of Kung Paano Nanalo Sa Karera Si Rosang Taba, based on the children’s short story of Dean Francis Alfar, How Rosang Taba Won a Race, adapted by Rody Vera and Maynard Manansala delighted its audience through its heartwarming and inspiring performance.

It is true that, in many cultures, being hefty is seen as a setback, prone to mockery and ridicule. It has been weeks since I watched the recent staging of Kung Paano Nanalo Sa Karera Si Rosang Taba, and every time I remember the scenes and song numbers, I can’t help but have a happy and inspiring feeling because of Kiki Baento’s performance. She was true to her character, which all of the audience loved. She created a powerful image for her character. She embodies the message of women’s empowerment, trust, confidence, and body positivity. A clear message that no one can take Mama Rosa down.

I felt excited to watch it, and it awakened the child in me, knowing that this was going to be one of the best performances that I’ll watch in 2024. DUP’s collaborative environment gave birth to a compelling narrative. The fresh approach to storytelling tackled significant topics that are still relevant to this day. The edge of this staging was its simplicity and being on point. The audience can easily connect to the story and the characters. This production is a testament to everyone fighting a difficult battle that they can defeat their opponents and that the impossible can be possible. It is a gift of positivity and encouragement.

Aldo Vencilao opened the show as a Cunbanchero, delivering songs and jokes that always hit your funny bones. The tandem of Meann Espinosa and Kiki Baento was chaoticly funny. Their antics were unpredictable. Meann’s characterization was smooth and skillful, delivering deliberate antics to each little personality change. Kiki’s timing and bits were all different every time and were all perfectly done based on what the scene required, and her physical comedy was masterful, never crossing the line into slapstick. These two lovely women made the whole experience fun and exciting. Carlon Matobato’s choreography blends well with Angel Dayao’s sound and music direction. Another unforgettable part of the experience was the mix of now and then. The relevance of each song, music, and dance is also fresh and young. Another relevant element that made the performance more appealing to the audience of all ages.

To sum it up, Rosang Taba felt like a warm hug. a safe space for those struggling with their body image. It was memorable and inspiring. It gave hope that we can reshape our views and perspectives about our body and its capabilities. Understanding and embracing your challenges is the key to success.
