Renaissance Art Gallery proudly presents “Streamlined II: The Art of National Artist Arturo Luz,” opening on June 3, 2025, at the Art Center, 4/F Building A, SM Megamall. This highly anticipated exhibition, curated by acclaimed artist-critic Cid Reyes, celebrates the timeless legacy of National Artist for Visual Arts Arturo Luz.

A Tribute to the Master of Modern Philippine Abstraction

“Streamlined II” explores Luz’s unparalleled mastery of abstraction, design, and spatial harmony. Featuring his iconic minimalist forms, the exhibition honors his career-long devotion to visual discipline and artistic innovation.

Luz, declared National Artist in 1997, began his journey at just 17, deeply influenced by Rufino Tamayo and Paul Klee. His works are celebrated for their spare elegance, featuring cyclists, carnival performers, still lifes, and imaginary landscapes executed in striking lines and balanced compositions.

From Figuration to Pure Abstraction

The exhibit traces Luz’s evolution from figurative art to pure abstraction, incorporating non-traditional materials such as burlap, plywood, and even mosaic tiles. His later works, inspired by travels across Asia and India, depict imaginary temples, fortresses, and battlements in earthy tones like burnt sienna, mustard yellow, and bronze—a symphony of lines and muted colors.

Legacy Beyond the Canvas

Beyond his art, Luz left a lasting mark on Philippine cultural institutions, managing the Luz Gallery, Museum of Philippine Art, Metropolitan Museum, and the Design Center of the Philippines during the 1980s. He redefined the Filipino visual sensibility—from vibrant and ornate to minimalist and contemplative.
